† All Thumbs

Recently while preparing my dinner, I made a huge mistake.  I was kind of hungry and not really paying close attention to what I was doing.   I soon realized the sharp pain I was feeling was due to a knife slicing the side of my thumb.  Feeling a little foolish and in pain—blood trickling from my thumb, I stopped preparing my meal in order to nurse myself.

The blood flowing and the pain coming from my thumb was pretty bad, but that wasn’t the worst of the incident.  Once the bleeding had stopped and the incision was cleaned and wrapped up, I continued to try to finish what I had started, but it was difficult to say the least.

Think on this for a minute—if you will.  Until that moment, I never really understood just how important it was to have working thumbs.  I guess I had taken them for granted.  For the rest of the evening, I was all thumbs.  It other words, because of the cut, the pain, and the discomfort I was experiencing, it was difficult for me to use my thumb as God intended.  For the next four days I could hardly do anything with that hand until my thumb healed, and the pain was gone.

This got me to thinking.  What if God had created us without thumbs?  Everything we tried to do with our hands would be harder without them.  We would not be able to hold a glass or bottle of water, grip a fork or turn a doorknob.  Think about it—we would be a bunch of clumpy people trying to navigate our way through life.

I imagine, this is how our life would be here on earth—without God to help us accomplish even the smaller things that we face day to day.  We would be all thumbs at best and end up making a mess out of things we’ve touched.  The Bible records Jesus saying that without Him we can do nothing.  Trying to function without thumbs is like trying to live life without the Lord!

Think about it.  Why live life “All Thumbs” in almost everything we attempt to accomplish.   Instead, why not allow the Lord to help us do the things that we desire and need to do?   I can guarantee if we rely on the Lord, we can enjoy the life we’ve been given as a gift from God Himself!  Life is hard enough by itself—now is not the time to live it “All Thumbs”.
