We are living in a time and age where things appear to be quite different. I can remember when folks were kind, thoughtful, concerned, and nice to others. It didn’t matter what culture they were or if they looked like them or not. Genuine respect for others lived on most streets, in most cities, and in most states.
Right now, negativity is in the air and is broadcasted through every media mechanism there is today. You see or listen to this person saying this to that person or this person doing this to that person. Mean and evil thoughts flow from people’s mouths at the drop of a hat. It saddens my heart to its core, but what can I do? I don’t have the power or control over what others say or what they do. People have free will, given to them as a blessing from God and I’m sure His intent was for us to be a blessing to each other. To love each other enough that we could live on the same street, fellowship at the church, and shop at the same mall.
What do you do when it looks like all of God’s written principles have fallen by the waste side? What do you do when it gets to the point where you can barely watch television without getting sucked into the negativity, the hatred, or the evil? Some people’s tolerance of these types of things is high and others are low. Some can’t sleep, can’t eat, and anxiety sets in silently and so quickly that they never saw it coming. Fear and dread are not far behind and before you know it they become depressed and unable to get out of bed.
Well, my beloved, before this settles into your home or your heart, I’d like to make a suggestion. You can’t afford to soak it all in—no it’s “Time to Unplug”! Since you only have control over yourself it may do you some good to unplug. What do I mean by that? I mean—pull away from the source of the negative power and purpose not to engage. Be intentional and selective of what you allow to filter through your eyes, your mind and your heart. If you practice this daily, soon you will begin to feel better and your hope for a brighter day will be renewed.
I challenge you not to ignore the things that are happening around you that may keep you from danger, but to not get so tuned-in that it begins to change your character and affect you in a negative way. Before you let that happen and before that can be the case—you need to Shake Yourself Loose and unplug, Yes, it’s “Time to Unplug” and I encourage you to do it today! (Read Proverbs 4:20-26)
